Review Logitech G29

Logitech G27 adalah perangkat steering wheel terakhir  keluaran Logitech yang sudah beredar sejak 2009. Sempat muncul rumor bahwa Logitech akan berhenti memproduksi wheel baru dengan ditutupnya divisi gaming peripheral pada tahun 2013. Namun rumor itu tidak bisa menghentikan G27 sebagai steering wheel yang paling handal, dengan segala kelengkapan standar dan ketersediaan aksesoris aftermarket yang berlimpah.

Memasuki babak baru console gaming (PS4/XBOX1) rupanya direspon secara positif oleh Logitech dengan merelease Logitech G29 untuk PC/PS3/PS4 dan Logitech G920 untuk PC/XBOX One. Perlu diperhatikan disini Logitech G27 sampai saat ini tidak disupport secara native olleh PS4. Ya memang ada beberapa peranti converter untuk PS4 namun tidak ada yang semaksimal native support dari segi response time dan Force Feed Back (FFB). Kemudian inilah pertama kali Logitech mempunyai lineup FFB wheel untuk console Microsoft.

Pada tulisan ini kita akan membandingkan antara Logitech G27 dan Logitech G29

Paket standar Logitech G29 dengan MSRP $399 terdiri atas setir dan pedal saja. Berbeda dengan G27 yang sudah dilengkapi dengan persneling. Pada G29, persneling dijual secara terpisah dengan harga $59.

Pada G29 ini Logitech menyematkan logo terbarunya di tengah lingkar setir, di housing setir dan di pedal. Batang setir yang terbuat dari stainless steel saat ini berwarna abu abu gelap dengan beberapa aksen tombol berwarna biru. LED indicator untuk RPM juga masih ada di G29

Semua tombol di persneling G27 dipindahkan ke setir dengan tambahan kenop putar senada dengan Logitech Driving Force GT (DFGT).  Namun dengan konfigurasi ini pun, Logitech G29 kehilangan 6 tombol di setir yang sebelumnya ada di G27. Sama sama dibalut kulit, lingkar setir G29 hanya berbeda di pola jahitan sebagai penyegaran.

Catatan penulis adalah pemilihan warna merah untuk kenop putar ini membuat setir menjadi agak “meriah”, kalau dibuat dengan warna biru maka akan senada dengan lainnya, atau dibuat aksennya merah semua akan lebih baik. Tapi ini adalah masalah selera.

Di pedal, ada perbedaan antara G29 dan G27. Yang jelas terlihat adalah silinder plastik berwarna hitam di G29 dibandingkan berwarna merah di G27. Selain itu Logitech meng-klaim peningkatan pada pedal rem yang saat ini memiliki efek progresif. Pedal rem G29 terasa sangat progresif, maksudnya adalah kekerasan pedal rem sampai setengah injakan terasa normal, kemudian perlu tenaga ekstra  untuk menekannya sampai batas maksimal.

Persneling G29 mirip dengan G27 hanya bagian atas beserta tombol tombolnya dihilangkan. Hal ini sedikit menyulitkan apabila hendak memodifikasi handbrake yang biasa dilakukan dengan menjumper tombol yang ada di shifter G27.

Kembali ke Setir.

Keuntungan dari  terpusatnya seluruh tombol di setir adalah mudah terjangkau pada saat bermain tanpa harus melepas genggaman pada setir. Jarak semua tombol pun ergonomis dan mudah terjangkau oleh ibu jari. Bagi kebanyakan pengguna, konfigurasi seperti ini sangat memudahkan dan simple. Namun ini adalah mimpi buruk bagi yang suka ganti setir. Logitech G25/G27 terkenal dengan banyaknya produk aftermarket dan kemudahan untuk dimodifikasi. Dengan semua tombol ada di setir, akan lebih susah untuk modif ringan seperti memasang handbrake mod, atau kita harus rela kehilangan semua fungsi tombol apabila bermaksud untuk mengganti setir dengan setir mobil asli kecuali bisa memindahkan semua tombol ke button box terpisah yang bukan pekerjaan mudah.

Build quality dari Logitech G29 bisa dibilang sama persis dengan G27. Bahkan housing setir dan pedal identik antara keduanya termasuk lokasi hard mount, clamp dan karet stopper. Diameter lingkar setir juga sama dengan G27, paddle shifter sama, hanya bagian bawah setir (arah jam 6) menjadi flat, dan ada tambahan metal ring di arah jam 12.

Spesifikasi power adaptor yang digunakan pada G29 sama dengan G27 (24V-1.75A), hanya sekarang beda bentuk karena mungkin berasal dari supplier yang berbeda.

In Game Impression:

PS3 (Gran Turismo 6): Feel sama persis dengan G27. Putaran setir terdengar halus walaupun bukan tanpa bunyi (masih terdengar sayup bunyi roda gigi di dalam setirnya). Navigasi menu nyaman dengan lengkapnya tombol di setir. Pedal rem progresif sangat membantu untuk mengendalikan sudut entry di tikungan, dan sangat berguna untuk mengatur kekuatan rem, trail braking dan terutama kalau ABS OFF. Sepertinya memang internal banyak persamaan dengan G27. “Kelemahan” nya pun sama dengan G27 yaitu bunyi bunyian seperti “klok-klok” apabila menerima input FFB yang berlebih misalkan di rally/offroad/drifting, atau jalanan yang sangat bumpy. Kalau internal G29 sama dengan G27, maka kemungkinan G29 akan menderita “penyakit” yang sama yaitu di optical encoder yang kadang retak/pecah pada pemakaian ekstrim. Untuk menghindari masalah ini, disarankan setting FFB di game diturunkan dari standarnya 50% menjadi 20% atau 30% apabila bermain offroad, rally atau drifting. Selebihnya semua feel sama persis dengan G27. Mudah mudahan next review diberi kesempatan untuk melihat komponen internal dari G29 apakah ada peningkatan kualitas dari optical encoder ini.

PS4 (DriveClub, Project Cars) : Sebelum mengoperasikan G29 di PS4, jangan lupa mengatur switch yang berada di atas logo setir dari PS3 ke PS4. Setelah terhubung, setir ini langsung bisa beroperasi mulai dari main menu (XMB). Pada kedua game tersebut, Logitech G29 berfungsi dengan sempurna, ffb dapat dirasakan. Oversteer, understeer, lost traction, brake locking, semua dapat dirasakan di setir. Sayang sekali bunyi “klok-klok” masih sempat terdengar di game PS4 dengan indikasi yang sama yaitu apabila mobil berada di jalan tidak rata, atau ketika drifting. Kemudian Sedikit catatan untuk pedal, karena pedal rem progresif, maka harus disiapkan alas yang solid agar pedal tidak bergerak ketika diinjak. Karena kadang tanpa terasa kita menginjak sangat keras (which is good), namun pedal bisa bergeser dari posisinya. Kecuali pedal di-hard mount di meja atau sekalian menggunakan cockpit simulator yang cukup rigid. Selain dari bunyi-bunyian dan kerasnya pedal itu, Logitech G29  bisa dibilang bekerja secara sempurna. Pengetesan dengan Logitech shifter pun berjalan lancar. Memang agak disayangkan mengapa shifternya dijual terpisah, namun dari pengalaman sebagai casual gamer, penggunaan manual shifter itu sangat jarang. Mostly kalau perpindahan gigi manual, yang dipakai adalah paddle shifter. Lagipula mobil mobil modern yang ada di game mayoritas sudah menggunakan paddle shift. Namun tentu saja apabila anda ingin merasakan sensasi tambahan maka bisa menambahkan shifter yang dijual terpisah.

Price:

MSRP untuk Logitech G29 adalah $399 dan shifternya $59, walaupun masih belum mendapatkan harga resmi dalam mata uang rupiah, harga ini memang lebih mahal dibandingkan Logitech G27, namun dengan fungsi utama yaitu support PS4, positioning harga ini membuat G29 akan head to head dengan Thurstmaster T300RS. Apabila dilihat dari kelengkapan yang ditawarkan dalam paket standar maupun lengkap, Logitech G29 memiliki value/money yang sangat bagus untuk setir yang compatible dengan PS4.

Pros:

• Simple design, similar with G27, build quality sudah terbukti kehandalannya. Apabila tidak selalu “dipaksa” untuk rallying atau drifting, setir ini bisa awet bertahun-tahun tanpa masalah.
• Semua tombol ada di setir memudahkan navigasi dan operasional game /menu.
• Pedal rem progresif sangat membantu feel bermain game, namun membutuhkan alas yang solid /cockpit agar tidak bergerak ketika diinjak.

Cons:

• Harga lebih mahal dari G27 dan absennya persneling dalam paket standar.
• Perilaku bawaan dari G27 (bunyi klok-klok) masih ada di G29. Kemungkinan ini adalah Achilles heel-nya G29, namun perlu pemeriksaan lebih mendalam ke internal setir untuk memastikan hal ini.

Kesimpulan:

Logitech telah melakukan penyegaran line up produk steering wheel dengan meluncurkan G29. Dengan konstruksi dan design yang mirip dengan pendahulunya (G27) yang sudah terbukti kehandalannya. Dengan winning formula seperti G27, setir ini adalah perangkat yang sangat layak untuk dimiliki bagi kombinasi pengguna PC/PS3/PS4.

Should I buy this wheel ? Tergantung platform yang digunakan

-          Platform PS4 à wheel ini WAJIB dimiliki.

-          Platform PS3 à good investment apabila pakai G29 dan ada rencana migrasi ke PS4

-          Platform PC à G27 sudah cukup memadai.

There are a few Steering wheel brand on the market, especially in Indonesia. They are Logitech, Thrustmaster, and Fanatec. 

CGR is fully compatible with all of them.

Logitech

Widely known as computer peripherals provider, Logitech offers wide range of steering wheel, for PC and Playstation 2/3. From entry level driving force, the mid-level Driving Force GT (DFGT) to the company’s flagship G27.

The most commonly used is the G27. It is very robust and have the best value for money.  It feature leather-wrapped wheel, 6-speed H-pattern shifter, and stainless steel pedals. Most of the exposed metal of G27 are made of stainless steel. CGR is fully compatible as it was made originally to use with Logitech G27. See the prototype.

Driving with clutch ON is a sheer pleasure. Its not the lap time that we are after, but the fun of it. You can polish your heel-and-toe techniques here without being worry about the pedal movement because CGR is rigid and ready to handle any maneuver of the user. Most of CGR owner use their rigs with Logitech G27.

Although this wheel is compatible with PC, it is very unfortunate this wheel is not compatible with XBOX. And Logitech didn’t supply XBOX-compatible wheel.

Other weak point of the wheel, based on community feedback, there is slight percentage of wheel failure from misalignment, mid-game recalibration, and lost of response. So make sure your G27 is covered by official warranty, just in case.

Thrustmaster

Thrustmaster is also an old player on gaming peripherals. The most recent hardware release is the mighty T500 RS steering wheel. Which became the new benchmark of high end wheels. It features detachable 12 inches wheel diameter, 1080 degree wheel rotation (compared with 900 degree of other brands), high resolution steering accuracy (16-bit resolution) using new HEART sensor technology. 

The most noticeable feature is the force feedback. It is powerful thanks to 3000rpm 150mNm industrial motor and belt mechanism (compared with gear from Logitech) provide smooth rotation. The pedals also in different class from other. Full metal construction, adjustable for floor mounted or suspended position.

CGR is fully compatible with this Gran Turismo 5 official wheel. The big and heavy wheel housing is easily hard mounted to provide rigidity. The bulky pedals also fitted nicely at the bottom, whether it is floor mounted or suspended style. CGR is the perfect companion if you own this wheel.

One small notice is cabling for the pedals. The cables are very small and soft compared to the heavy pedals assembly. Special care must be taken during usage or installation to prevent the cable getting pinched by the pedals. The problem posted on this blog

Fanatec

Fanatec is a German-based company and has been impressed many reviewers with their 911 wheels lineup. For a long time, there hasn’t been a quality racing wheel capable of supporting the Xbox 360, the PC and the Playstation 3. If sim racers wanted to enjoy not only rFactor and Richard Burns Rally, but also RACE Pro and Forza Motorsport 3, they had to own two wheels: one to drive on the PC, and a “low” quality wheel from Microsoft to drive on the Xbox 360. To fill this gap, Fanatec come with the product.  It impressed us on many levels, including not only multi-platform compatibility but also featuring a load cell brake pedal and super-smooth, belt-drive FFB. When the time came, the hardest of our hard-core sim racers had to give it a go: When partnered with Clubsport Pedals and the Fanatec Shifter Kit, it’s really something quite special.

It features official licensed Porsche wheel the same with one at the actual Porsche cars. The high end products like Porsche GR3RS wheel and Porsche Wheel Turmo S (PWTS) feature vibrating motor at the wheel housing. Wheel setting can be adjusted live by the buttons on the wheel. 

The pedals, especially Club Sport Pedals (CSP) is state of the art product. Fully alumunium, featuring vibrating motor at the brake pedal and load cell sensor for brake pedals. It adds new dimension and more simulating the real life.

CGR is fully compatible with fanatec wheels. The vibration motor really adds  a new dimension. The vibration can be felt from the seat, and you can feel it shakes more during high RPM driving. This high end wheel must be hooked up with a perfect cockpit setup and this is where CGR plays it role.

One downside of this wheel is the fact that Fanatec wouldn’t ship to Asia, so in order to get this wheel, one must handcarry from Europe/US. Retailers in in Jakarta usually procure it that way, and thus make the wheel price is very high.

CGR + Thrustmaster T500 RS

So here it is, the one that I use everyday. Champion Gaming Rig (CGR) fitted with Thrustmaster T500 RS

This is the best available wheel for Gran Turismo 5 game so far. For those who are using Logitech G-series, there are some additional feedback from GT5 present here like track bumps, kerbs, and lost of traction. Separate review on the T500 RS will be made separately.

One thing that T500 RS requires is rigidity. The wheel's feedback is very strong, and the pedal assembly is heavy. All of those need proper rig setup and CGR has proven it's compatibility with this high-end wheel.

Pedals can be mounted in "F1-style" or "inverted" just like in normal car. On this setup, it was mounted like a normal car (inverted) and it provides nice feeling and an additional faceplate mounted on the back of the pedals to give nice finishing and put some logo there.

Champion Gaming Rig has proven its reliability after 2 months of usage with T500 RS on daily basis. It's the perfect companion for this high end wheel.
